I’m starting a new tag and a new category of posts with this. I am going to start following unemployment for now. There is so much pain out there, 10 days from Christmas 2010, that I just think that we need to reflect on what our country is doing to itself through its elected officials.
I will start with a primer on unemployment insurance from Ezra Klein at the Washington Post which helps us understand the fact that not everyone who was on the extended benefits gets 99 weeks. The people who run out of these benefits, and the estimate is that at the end of 2010 it will be more than 3 million people, have only meager welfare benefits to fall back on. This map is great:
